Abstract

This chapter seeks to bring together the cultural and organisational strands of the early parts of the book together with the empirical longitudinal research in order to further develop the literature about what it means to become a police officer. The areas of police socialisation, identity and culture are all reviewed in order to establish whether the traditional conceptions and frameworks can still be applied to the modern police officer. The chapter concludes that the ‘new’ policing characteristics can be described as cynicism, compassion, communication, conformity, camaraderie, code of self-protection and categorisation.
