Abstract

This chapter delves into the divergent perspectives of Southern newspapers and Northern abolitionists on the Haitian Revolution, with a particular focus on the Richmond Enquirer and its editor, Thomas Ritchie. The text explores how Northern abolitionists used the Revolution to push for immediate emancipation in the South, citing Haiti as a warning of the potential consequences of maintaining slavery. In contrast, Southern newspapers, including the Richmond Enquirer, reported on Haiti in a relatively impartial and temperate manner, often reprinting articles from other newspapers and avoiding inflammatory rhetoric. The chapter also examines the unique position of Thomas Ritchie, who supported Jefferson's proposal for gradual emancipation and colonization of freed slaves to Haiti. Additionally, the text discusses the exceptional nature of the Haitian Revolution, highlighting its success in defeating three major European empires and establishing a nation-state ruled by nonwhites. The chapter concludes by arguing that Southern newspapers did not generally rebuke Haiti or its government, and that further study of print media's attitudes toward the Haitian Revolution can enhance our understanding of early nineteenth-century white Southern elite attitudes on slavery and race.
