Abstract

The chapter explores the paradox of why economic liberalization did not lead to democratization in resource-poor authoritarian regimes of the MENA region, focusing on Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco from 1950 to 2011. It hypothesizes that economic liberalization stabilized rather than destabilized these regimes, with consumer-price liberalization and privatization playing pivotal roles. The study identifies specific time periods and policies that influenced regime stability, highlighting the complex interplay between economic and political factors. It concludes with implications for understanding the resilience of authoritarian regimes and suggests avenues for further research.
