Abstract

This chapter delves into the clandestine relationships between New Left leaders and foreign Communist officials, focusing on the period from 1965 onwards. It reveals how the FBI monitored these interactions, using various intelligence methods to gather information. The chapter also explores the complexities of foreign influence, highlighting the challenges of determining the exact nature of power relations in a context of strategic deception. It discusses the FBI's use of human, signals, and open-source intelligence to track the activities of American activists and their foreign counterparts. The chapter concludes that while the FBI's investigations were not solely based on organizational self-interest, they were driven by credible intelligence concerns about the New Left's connections to foreign powers. It also emphasizes the need for further research to fully understand the FBI's decision-making processes and the extent of foreign influence on American activists. Additionally, the chapter provides insights into the FBI's actions during the Cold War, challenging common conclusions about its motivations and methods. It underscores the importance of a probabilistic approach to understanding historical events, given the uncertainties and complexities of intelligence work.
