Abstract

This chapter explores the potential of biomass ash and biochar as sustainable soil amendments that can partially replace conventional mineral fertilizers. Biomass ash, derived from the combustion of woody and herbaceous biomass, contains essential macronutrients like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, and can neutralize acidic soils. Biochar, produced through the pyrolysis of biomass, enhances soil's cation exchange capacity and water retention, acting as a long-term carbon sink. Both materials improve soil chemical and physical properties, leading to increased pH, higher base saturation, and better soil structure. They also contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lower reliance on synthetic fertilizers. The chapter discusses the environmental co-benefits, such as carbon sequestration and reduced pesticide use, as well as the challenges and risks, including variability in chemical composition and potential contaminants. Practical recommendations for long-term field studies, quality standards, and integration into soil management strategies are provided. The findings underscore the significant potential of biomass ash and biochar in supporting sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
