Abstract

This chapter examines the 2024 adaptation of 'Ripley,' focusing on its moral ambiguity, aesthetic choices, and its place in the era of SVOD and postmodernism. The analysis delves into the series' use of the 'cringe aesthetic,' its critique of late capitalism, and its exploration of sex- and gender-fluidity. The chapter also compares and contrasts the 2024 adaptation with previous versions, offering a unique perspective on the evolution of the Ripley story. The series' focalization through the morally ambivalent protagonist, Tom Ripley, creates a complex evocation of alignment for the audience, prompting them to interrogate their own moral normativity. The chapter concludes by discussing the series' potential to inspire future scholarship in the fields of adaptation, sexuality, and television studies.
