Abstract

This chapter delves into the enduring influence of traditional television practices within the streaming landscape, challenging the popular narrative of streaming as a disruptive force. It examines how major streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and others have incorporated conventional television practices such as appointment viewing, commercial interruption, and linear scheduling. The research demonstrates that despite the technological advancements of streaming, many foundational elements of television culture continue to inform the streaming landscape. Key insights include the emergence of appointment viewing in SVOD contexts, the continued relevance of commercial interruption as a funding model, and the persistence of traditional linear broadcasting. The chapter also explores how national specificities and institutional gatekeepers play crucial roles in shaping the streaming ecosystem. Additionally, it highlights the ongoing importance of episodic storytelling and the adaptation of traditional televisual conventions to contemporary online contexts. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the cyclical nature of media evolution, where new technologies adapt to existing industrial frameworks and cultural values, rather than completely disrupting them. This detailed analysis provides a comprehensive overview of how television traditions continue to influence and shape the streaming landscape, offering valuable insights into the complexities of contemporary television industries.
