Configuration Systems Applied to the Healthcare Sector for an Enhanced Prescription Process

The chapter delves into the challenges posed by drug-related problems and adverse drug events in the healthcare sector, highlighting the need for more effective prescription processes. It introduces configuration systems (CSs) as a potential solution, drawing from their successful application in other industries. The research focuses on the Danish healthcare system, where the implementation of CSs could significantly reduce medication errors and improve patient safety. The study presents a case study from Horsens Hospital, detailing the development of a configurator prototype to address these issues. The configurator aims to provide real-time alerts and recommendations, enhancing the current electronic prescribing system. The chapter also discusses the potential benefits and challenges of integrating CSs into the healthcare system, including the reduction of human resources dedicated to error detection and the need for contextualized warnings to prevent alert fatigue.
