Abstract

The article 'Conflict in moral and nonmoral decision making: an empirical study coupled with a computational model' delves into the intricate dynamics of decision-making processes when faced with moral and nonmoral conflicts. It begins by illustrating how conflict affects the difficulty and extremity of decisions in both moral and nonmoral contexts. The study introduces a novel approach that combines empirical data from a mouse-tracking experiment with computational modeling to trace the decision-making process in real-time. The computational model, based on dynamic neural fields, simulates how different pieces of evidence compete and aggregate to form a final decision. The article highlights the distinct strategies employed in moral and nonmoral decisions, with moral decisions often leading to more stable positions. It also discusses the impact of conflict intensity on response times and decision dynamics, providing insights into the cognitive processes underlying these behaviors. The study concludes by suggesting that moral content is processed differently and earlier than nonmoral content, offering a nuanced understanding of how morality influences decision-making. This comprehensive approach makes the article a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners interested in the intersection of psychology, cognitive science, and decision-making processes.
