Abstract

The article delves into the conformation and thermoresponsiveness of a graft copolymer with poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline (PiPrOx) side chains and an aromatic polyester main chain, featuring a short alkylene spacer. The study investigates how the spacer length affects the copolymer's properties, focusing on its behavior in aqueous solutions. The authors synthesized and characterized the copolymer, APE 4-graft-PiPrOx, and conducted detailed light scattering experiments to analyze its molecular characteristics and thermoresponsiveness. The findings reveal that the copolymer adopts a compact conformation in water, with the main chain shielded by hydrophilic side chains. Upon heating, the copolymer undergoes a phase transition involving intramolecular compaction before intermolecular aggregation, leading to phase separation at significantly higher temperatures compared to other PiPrOx copolymers. The study provides valuable insights into the design and behavior of thermoresponsive polymer brushes, making it a crucial read for specialists in polymer chemistry and materials science.
