Abstract

The chapter presents a methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts of automotive lightweight body parts during the conceptual design stage. It introduces the MultiMaK2 project, which aims to guide design processes towards eco-efficient alternatives by redesigning body parts with hybrid multi-material designs. The methodology includes a semi-streamlined LCA approach to compare different lightweight concept alternatives, considering multiple specifications for the different life cycle stages. The chapter details the modelling of material and energy flows, as well as the life cycle impact assessment and interpretation. Two case studies are presented, focusing on a roof reinforcement structure and a centre tunnel, to demonstrate the application of the methodology. The chapter highlights the importance of considering the entire life cycle of body parts, from raw materials provision to end-of-life, and the need for robust LCA tools in conceptual design. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities for further research in this area.
