Abstract

This chapter explores the implementation of context-aware air quality analytics using low-cost sensors and first-order logic in a modern dairy facility in Greece. The study focuses on the impact of particulate matter on dairy processing, highlighting the importance of air quality monitoring for product quality and human health. The research involves the deployment of fifteen SibaIoT PM devices in three production areas, measuring particulate matter concentrations, humidity, and temperature. The data collected is analyzed using a dual-layer knowledge representation architecture, which includes a Sensor Abstract Layer (SAL) and a Deductive Abstract Layer (DAL). The SAL captures low-level sensor-derived knowledge, while the DAL maintains abstract knowledge about air quality in logical regions. The study also introduces the concept of Sentient Computing, which enables the system to reason with temporal and spatial abstractions of air quality data. The results of the study provide valuable insights into the air quality dynamics within the dairy facility, identifying key factors that influence air quality and suggesting potential intervention strategies. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the broader implications of the findings for the dairy industry and air quality management.
