Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of geometallurgy in optimizing copper mining projects, focusing on two underground copper projects at the prefeasibility stage. The text explores the methodology of geometallurgy, emphasizing the importance of understanding ore variability to enhance mine planning and plant design. It provides a detailed comparison of geometallurgy programs for the Twin Metals Project in Minnesota and the Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, highlighting the unique challenges and solutions for each deposit type. The chapter also discusses the systematic approach to characterizing ore samples, including geochemistry, quantitative mineralogy, comminution, and mineral processing flowsheet. It concludes with the development of geometallurgical units (GMUs) and the iterative nature of geometallurgical programs, demonstrating how these programs can de-risk projects and increase their value.
