Abstract

The chapter examines the role of corporate governance in enhancing the performance of Malaysian elderly care centres run by NGOs. It begins by addressing the under-researched area of corporate governance in NGOs, particularly in the context of elderly care. The study identifies key challenges such as misconduct, lack of transparency, and poor accountability, which have eroded public trust in NGOs. Through a qualitative approach, the research explores the current practices and perceptions of corporate governance among NGO leaders. The findings reveal that while some NGOs comply with basic regulatory requirements, there is a significant gap in adopting best practices for transparency and accountability. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for improved corporate governance to build trust and ensure the sustainability of elderly care centres.
