Die Begriff Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wurde 1953 von Howard R. Bowen in seinem Buch Social Responsibilities of the businessman (eng. = gesellschaftliche Verantwortung des Geschäftsmannes) verwendet und steht für die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung der Unternehmen.
