Abstract

The chapter delves into the growing interest in advanced materials and lightweight structures in the aerospace, maritime, and automotive industries. It highlights the advantages of composite materials, particularly fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP), and their use in sandwich structures. The study compares aluminium honeycomb sandwich structures with conventional composite sandwich structures, focusing on their energy absorption properties under quasi-static and low-velocity impact conditions. The research aims to evaluate the possibility of replacing polymeric sandwich structures with aluminium honeycomb sandwich structures, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. The comparison is made considering the same flexural stiffness, and the results show that aluminium honeycomb structures can provide similar or better energy absorption properties, making them a viable option for future applications.
