Abstract

This study delves into the correlation between macroeconomic variables and traffic safety in Malaysia, focusing on the period from 2000 to 2019. Key topics include the impact of GDP, unemployment rates, oil prices, and exchange rates on traffic fatalities and injuries. The research employs the Autoregressive Distribution Lag (ARDL) approach to identify both short-run and long-run relationships. Notably, the study finds that economic growth positively correlates with traffic fatalities in the long run, while oil prices significantly reduce traffic injuries. The findings underscore the importance of integrating economic insights into traffic safety policies, suggesting a balanced approach to economic growth and road safety. The study also highlights the need for comprehensive interventions that consider disadvantaged groups and the potential of economic variables to influence traffic safety outcomes.
