Abstract

The chapter delves into the optimization of recyclable honeycomb sandwich panels, a crucial component in various industries due to their lightweight and high strength properties. It begins by introducing the typical construction of sandwich panels and the common modes of failure under flexural loading. The authors then develop a technique to maximize the strength-to-weight ratio of honeycomb materials, differing from previous studies by focusing on the core material's relative density. The methodology involves establishing five failure criteria and evaluating five different combinations to obtain optimal weight values. The chapter also provides a detailed analysis of the geometrical parameters of a honeycomb and the material properties of aluminum and polypropylene used in the study. Through manual optimization and MATLAB simulations, the authors identify the optimal weight index and the dominant modes of failure at various relative densities. The results highlight the feasible solutions and the lowest achievable panel density, making this chapter a valuable resource for professionals seeking to enhance the efficiency and performance of honeycomb sandwich panels.
