Renault is riding the retro wave: After the new R5 and plans to relaunch the R4, a restomod of the R17 is now set to follow.

Renault has presented the R17 Electric Restomod x Ora Ïto. “The original Renault 17 and its sports coupé look are still recognizable. We have, so to speak, transported the Renault 17 into the future by making some subtle changes that give it a completely new look,” says designer Ora Ïto. Instead of the four round headlights of the original from 1971, the restomod features four rectangular modules with rounded corners at the front. The frameless windows, the interior, doors, windows, glazing, seals and underbody remain unchanged. The body, which is built on the monocoque structure of the original, has been widened by 17 cm to improve road holding. While the side slats at the rear have been retained, the rear lights of the new edition now consist of a simple light strip.

The restomod retains the original standard of comfort in the interior, but with some changes to the dashboard and center console. The seat covers are made of a blend of merino wool and wool bouclé. In the cockpit, four small geometric screens inspired by the original's gauges can be found behind the angular steering wheel. There is also a small screen at the bottom of the center console.

Of course, the drive system of the restomod has also been updated: instead of an inline four-cylinder engine, the coupé now has a 199 kW (270 hp) electric motor at the rear. In conjunction with the carbon fiber chassis, which enables a total weight of 1.4 t, the show car should have appealing driving performance. The R17 Electric Restomod x Ora Ïto can be seen at the “Maison5” in Paris until September 11, then at the “Chantilly Arts & Elegant Richard Mille” from September 12 to 15, and finally at the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show from October 14 to 20.
