Abstract

This paper treats the nonlinear problem of a coupled lateral-torsional drill string. A simplified 3 DOF system is used to model the system. The nonlinearity has two main sources: (1) the nonlinear bit-rock interaction, and (2) the impact between the column and the borehole. We classified different dynamics regimes (stick-slip, forward whirl, backward whirl, etc) and construct a map varying the rotational speed imposed at the top and the weight-on-bit. The Maximum Entropy Principle is employed to construct a probabilistic model for the borehole wall friction, and the stochastic response is approximated using the Monte Carlo Method. A probabilistic map is built with the stochastic model used, where the probability of the system to reach a given dynamic regime is shown.
