Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate world of concrete shrinkage and cracking, focusing on the role of internal curing materials and fly ash in mitigating these issues in self-compacting concrete. The study meticulously examines the effects of super absorbent polymers (SAP) and lightweight expanded clay aggregates (LECA) on the restrained shrinkage properties of concrete with varying percentages of fly ash. Through a rigorous experimental methodology, the research determines the age at cracking under restrained conditions, providing a comprehensive analysis of the strain and stress rates in different concrete mixes. The findings reveal that the inclusion of fly ash and internal curing materials significantly reduces the potential for cracking, with SAP showing superior performance compared to LECA. The study concludes that the combination of fly ash and internal curing materials effectively delays the initiation of drying and cracking, thereby enhancing the durability and longevity of self-compacting concrete structures.
