Abstract

This chapter delves into the evolving landscape of cinematic virtual reality (CVR) documentaries and their potential to reshape the representation of personal trauma. Focusing on the creative practice-as-research method, it explores how The Road to Yesterday (2025) uses animation, archival footage, and 360-degree video to reconstruct traumatic memory and create an immersive, embodied experience of grief. The chapter highlights the use of haptic visuality and non-photorealistic reenactment to articulate subjective perception beyond photorealism. It also discusses the multisensory strategies employed to construct embodied access to trauma, drawing on insights from trauma theory, VR studies, and new documentary studies. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the potential of CVR documentaries to offer alternative modes for engaging with loss, memory, and symbolic closure, and suggests future research directions for exploring the therapeutic potential of CVR technologies.
