Abstract

The article delves into the critical fiber dimensions needed to prevent spalling of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) under high temperatures. It discusses the widespread use of UHPC in structures like bridges and nuclear facilities, highlighting the risk of explosive spalling due to its dense microstructure. The study focuses on the addition of polypropylene fibers to create interconnected paths for vapor pressure relief. Extensive research has yielded conflicting results on the efficacy of different fiber dimensions. This experimental investigation systematically examines the effect of fiber geometry on spalling prevention, measuring permeability at various temperatures and observing microstructural changes through scanning electron microscopy. The results reveal significant changes in permeability and spalling resistance based on fiber length and diameter, with finer and longer fibers proving more effective. The study concludes that an aspect ratio of approximately 300 is crucial for spalling protection, offering valuable insights for future research and practical applications in the construction industry.
