Abstract

The article 'CueAnon: What QAnon Signals About Congressional Candidates and What it Costs Them' delves into the intriguing topic of how Americans evaluate congressional candidates who support the QAnon conspiracy theory. The study, conducted through a series of pre-registered experiments and observational studies, aims to fill a gap in understanding how voters perceive and respond to candidates who publicly embrace conspiracy theories. The authors challenge the notion that such support is electorally beneficial, finding that QAnon support does not enhance candidate favorability and may even be detrimental. The research highlights the negative media coverage associated with QAnon support and its impact on voter evaluations, even among those with low trust in mainstream media. The study also explores the direct effects of QAnon support on vote choice and ideological perceptions, revealing that support for QAnon generally decreases the likelihood of vote choice and favorability, except for signaling ideological conservatism, particularly among Democrats. The findings offer a nuanced understanding of the political landscape surrounding conspiracy theories and their implications for candidate positioning and public opinion.
