Abstract

This chapter delves into the adaptation strategies of two Indigenous Himalayan tribes, the Bhotia in Mana, Chamoli, and the Buksa in Kukraun, Pauri Garhwal, in response to climate change, globalization, and economic pressures. The study identifies key environmental factors, such as changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, and water availability, that have impacted traditional practices and livelihoods. It also analyzes economic influences, including market integration and globalization, which have affected socio-economic dynamics. The chapter documents the adaptive strategies employed by these communities, such as altering agricultural practices, engaging in alternative livelihoods, and leveraging traditional knowledge for sustainable resource management. A comparative analysis of the Bhotia and Buksa tribes reveals significant differences in their adaptation strategies and socio-economic resilience. The Bhotia tribe has successfully integrated traditional knowledge with modern practices, leading to economic diversification and cultural preservation. In contrast, the Buksa tribe faces challenges due to limited adaptation and ongoing development pressures, resulting in economic decline and cultural erosion. The study concludes by proposing a framework for sustainable development based on the successful adaptation strategies identified in the Bhotia community. This framework aims to mitigate the existential crisis faced by the Buksa tribe and other similar communities in the Himalayan region.
