Zusammenfassung

Die Cultural Studies stellen einen interdisziplinären, zuerst in Groβbritannien entwickelten Werkzeugkasten für die Analyse von Medien und anderen Formen der Populärkultur dar, der in den Film Studies der 1980er- und 1990er-Jahre auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks zunehmend an Einfluss gewann und die Ansätze der psychoanalytischen und ideologiekritischen Filmtheorie der 1970er-Jahre in Frage zu stellen half. Statt die abstrakte Positionierung des Zuschauers und der Zuschauerin durch die Strukturen des filmischen „Texts“ und des kinematografischen Apparats zum Ausgangspunkt zu machen, orientieren sich die Cultural Studies am empirischen Rezeptionsverhalten des Publikums und betonen dabei Momente des Eigensinns und der Subversion intendierter Bedeutungen. Film und Cultural Studies blicken auf eine von gegenseitiger Kritik und wechselseitiger Inspiration geprägte Geschichte zurück, die inzwischen lang genug ist, um beide Forschungsperspektiven im Folgenden einer selbstkritischen Reflektion und Historisierung zu unterwerfen.
