Abstract

The article delves into the current state of computer science (CS) education in high schools, focusing on the experiences and motivations of students. It discusses the importance of CS education for future job markets and the need for diverse representation. The study identifies key factors influencing students' decisions to continue or discontinue CS courses, including gender differences and the role of teachers and curriculum. The research is based on a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data from a survey of over 600 high school students with qualitative insights from their responses. The findings highlight the critical need to create more positive and inclusive learning environments to encourage continued participation in CS.
