Abstract

This chapter explores the optimization of container management in waste-sorting facilities, focusing on the challenges posed by fluctuating material types, unpredictable daily volumes, and stringent safety constraints. The authors present a hybrid reinforcement learning (RL) method that combines curriculum learning with a domain-specific collision model to address these issues. The text delves into the three-phase curriculum learning strategy designed to tackle delayed rewards and dual-volume targets, as well as the offline-trained collision model that provides on-the-fly inference checks to prevent collisions. Empirical results demonstrate significant reductions in collisions, safety limit violations, and improvements in throughput. The chapter also offers actionable guidelines on the optimal ratio of containers to processing units, providing valuable insights for facility design and operation. The integration of RL not only optimizes day-to-day operations but also informs hardware design decisions, making it a comprehensive solution for enhancing efficiency and safety in waste-sorting facilities.
