Abstract

The chapter delves into the comparison of curvature ductility between reinforced concrete (RC) and reinforced masonry (RM) walls, focusing on their performance under different aspect ratios and axial loads. It discusses the superior seismic performance of RM walls due to their nonlinear and inelastic actions, and explores the design and detailing considerations for vertical and horizontal reinforcements. The text also covers the complexities of numerical modelling for RM walls, comparing micro-modelling and macro-modelling approaches. Additionally, it provides closed-form solutions for determining the curvature ductilities of RC and RM walls under increasing axial compressive loads, emphasizing the potential of RM walls in regions with moderate to high seismicity. The chapter concludes with a comparison of idealized moment-curvature relations, showcasing the effectiveness of the proposed equations in capturing the nonlinear moment-curvature interaction.
