Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of cutting speed in achieving optimal machining performance, particularly in transverse cutting processes on lathe machines. It begins by reviewing existing studies on the impact of cutting speed on surface roughness, tool wear, and other essential parameters. The chapter introduces a simulation approach using Matlab/Simulink to analyze the behavior of cutting tools and recommend cutting speeds based on observed phenomena. A key focus is the comparison between Constant Surface Speed (CSS) and constant spindle speed (G97) modes, revealing how different settings affect cutting force stability and simulation time. The simulation model, based on a one-degree-of-freedom system, considers dynamic chip thickness and cutting force, incorporating velocity effects and flank contact. Results from simulations on AISI 1045 and modified materials provide specific recommendations for cutting speeds, highlighting the importance of avoiding unwanted behaviors such as chatter. The chapter concludes by proposing further experimental validation to confirm the simulation findings, offering a comprehensive guide to optimizing cutting speeds for enhanced machining performance.
