Abstract

The chapter delves into the cybersecurity challenges posed by blockchain and smart contract technologies in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). It begins by outlining the goals of Industry 4.0 and the role of IIoT in achieving these objectives. The text then focuses on the security issues that hinder the widespread adoption of IIoT, highlighting the potential of blockchain and smart contracts as solutions. However, it also acknowledges the specific challenges these technologies face in IIoT environments, such as scalability, computational resource limitations, and consensus algorithm selection. The chapter discusses various use cases where blockchain and smart contracts have been successfully implemented in IIoT settings, showcasing their potential to enhance data security, traceability, and trust. It concludes by summarizing the main findings and proposing a conceptual framework for future IIoT cybersecurity, emphasizing the need for a proactive and integrated approach to address these challenges effectively.
