Abstract

This chapter delves into the innovative use of dance as a tool for peacebuilding and nonviolence training within an interdisciplinary course at the University of Rochester. The 'Dances of Identity' activity is a key focus, demonstrating how students can deeply reflect on their personal identities, develop empathy for their peers, and strengthen community bonds through shared vulnerability and witnessing. The chapter also explores the cultural and spiritual significance of dance, particularly in African contexts, and discusses the potential of dance-based activities for broader peacebuilding projects. By combining theoretical insights with practical case studies, the chapter offers a compelling argument for the transformative power of dance in fostering personal growth and community cohesion.
