Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of intermodal connections in public transport networks, focusing on suburban rail stations. It reviews existing literature and best practices to assess the temporal quality and punctuality of transfers, highlighting the gaps in current metrics. The study introduces a new metric for evaluating the convenience of transfers, inspired by Swiss Federal Railways' connection punctuality metric. This metric considers minimum connection times, maximum connection allowances, and walking times between stops. The chapter applies this metric to the GO Transit rail network in Ontario, Canada, analyzing scheduled services for a weekday. The results reveal significant variability in connection convenience across different stations, with some stations performing poorly due to lack of coordination between services. The study concludes by discussing the potential for improving service integration and the importance of real-time data in assessing transfer quality. It also suggests further research directions, including the application of the metric to other transit networks and the incorporation of real-time passenger demand data.
