Abstract

This chapter delves into the innovative use of data-driven performance analysis and generative design techniques in architecture, leveraging swarm intelligence algorithms to optimize building structures and forms. It explores the evolution of computational design methods, from traditional post-rationalized geometries to pre-rationalized geometries driven by performance data. The chapter also highlights the application of Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) and Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) methods in architectural design, showcasing their potential through case studies like the Sagrada Familia and Palazzetto dello Sport. Additionally, it discusses the integration of digital fabrication technologies such as large-scale robotic 3D printing and augmented reality holographic digital construction, demonstrating how these advanced manufacturing processes can realize complex architectural designs. The chapter concludes by proposing a new performance data-driven bionic swarm computational design method, which combines the advantages of both performance data-driven design and swarm intelligence algorithms, offering a promising path for future architectural design.
