Abstract

This chapter delves into the mixed logit model, an advanced technique to handle taste variations in choice modeling. It builds on the latent class logit model, introducing random coefficients and error components to better capture unobserved heterogeneity. The chapter uses a dataset from the AER package to illustrate the model's application, comparing it with multinomial logit, nested logit, and multinomial probit models. The mixed logit model's ability to approximate any discrete choice model and its intuitive interpretation of results are highlighted. Practical examples and code snippets are provided, making it a valuable resource for econometricians and data scientists seeking to understand and apply advanced choice modeling techniques.
