Abstract

The chapter explores the increasing risk of in-orbit collisions due to the planned launch of hundreds of thousands of satellites. It highlights the limitations of ground-based sensors and proposes the use of on-board LiDAR systems to enhance the accuracy of orbital information. The analysis focuses on the characteristics of observing opportunities before potential collisions, with a detailed examination of historical conjunction events. The chapter also discusses the system requirements and design of a spaceborne LiDAR system, emphasizing its advantages in terms of interference immunity and sensitivity. The proposed system aims to significantly reduce the frequency of unnecessary satellite maneuvers, contributing to safer and more efficient space operations.
