Abstract

The chapter begins with an overview of the importance of braking systems in vehicle safety, highlighting the need for efficient use of traction to ensure reliable deceleration. It delves into the fundamental mechanics of braking, using a straightforward kinetic analysis to illustrate the principles. The chapter also discusses the critical functions of a brake system, including maintaining vehicle speed on downhill gradients and holding the vehicle stationary on slopes. Additionally, it explores the complexities of brake proportioning and adhesion utilization, emphasizing the need for intelligent braking effort distribution to prevent locking and maintain stability. The chapter includes a detailed case study on the effects of load distribution on brake performance and concludes with an examination of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and their role in enhancing vehicle safety and stability.
