Abstract

This study delves into the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities of two prominent conducting polymers, polyaniline (PANI) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), with a particular focus on the K-band (18-26.5 GHz). The research investigates the optical, structural, morphological, dielectric, and EMI shielding properties of these polymers, providing a comprehensive comparison. The study reveals that PANI exhibits superior EMI shielding effectiveness due to its better interconnected morphology, enhanced dielectric loss, higher AC conductivity, and lower skin depth. In contrast, PEDOT:PSS, with its layered morphology and lower conductivity, shows appreciable shielding potential suitable for moderate applications. The study also highlights the environmental compatibility of these materials using the Green Index (GI), with PANI showing a higher GI value. The findings underscore the importance of optimizing microstructure and charge transport pathways for designing high-performance EMI shielding materials. The research concludes that both PANI and PEDOT:PSS have unique features that can be tailored for effective EMI shielding applications, with PANI being more suitable for advanced, absorption-dominant shielding systems.
