In the controversy over the role of multinational companies emphasis is normally placed on the effects of their activities on host countries. In this paper the standpoint is reversed. An attempt is made to answer, from evidence relating to Unilever’s subsidiary in India, one question: what difference political independence made to the character of the company’s operations in that country.
