Abstract

The chapter delves into the concept of a smart factory, emphasizing the need for an updated definition that encompasses both technical and contextual characteristics. It reviews existing definitions and identifies gaps, particularly the lack of consideration for societal and political agendas. The authors propose a new definition through a Delphi study involving international experts, focusing on interconnecting assets into a digital ecosystem to adapt, run, and optimize operations according to current and future business conditions. This definition also highlights the importance of reflecting societal requirements. The chapter provides a detailed analysis of the definition and illustrates it with a case study of the Aalborg University Smart Production Lab, showcasing how the lab addresses mass customization and supports continuous innovation and sustainability. The chapter concludes by discussing the implications of the new definition and suggests areas for future research.
