Abstract

The article 'Defend women’s rights and save the trees: a cross-national analysis of women’s immovable property rights and forest loss' delves into the critical relationship between women’s legal rights to land and property and forest loss in low- and middle-income nations. Utilizing data from satellite imagery and the World Bank’s Women, Business, and the Law database, the study employs ordinary least squares and two-stage instrumental variable regression models to analyze forest loss in 65 nations. The research finds that countries with stronger legal protections for women’s property rights experience less forest loss, underscoring the importance of women's rights in sustainable forest management. The analysis also highlights the unique connection women have with nature and their role in preserving forests, providing a fresh perspective on environmental conservation efforts.
