Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of fluoride contamination in water and its severe health impacts, particularly in disadvantaged communities. It explores various methods of defluoridation, focusing on the use of tea ash as a natural and cost-effective adsorbent. The study investigates the optimal conditions for fluoride removal, including dosage, pH, and contact time, through a series of experiments. It compares the effectiveness of acid-washed and alkali-washed tea ash, revealing that alkali-treated tea ash outperforms acid-treated tea ash in fluoride removal. The chapter also discusses the economic and environmental benefits of using tea ash, making a strong case for its application in rural areas with high fluoride concentrations. The findings suggest that tea ash bioadsorbent is an effective and economical choice for reducing fluoride levels in water, supporting environmental and economic sustainability.
