Abstract

This study delves into the intricate dynamics of pedestrian behavior and delay measurement at three key intersections in Kanpur, India: Tatmill Chauraha, Bhairav Ghat, and Rave 3 Mall. By employing observational methods and data analysis, the research identifies trends and patterns in pedestrian movement, focusing on walking speed, stopping patterns, and interactions with vehicles. The study quantifies delay metrics such as total delay time, average delay per pedestrian, and peak delay periods, highlighting the impact of traffic congestion, signal timings, and pedestrian facilities on delays. Notably, Tatmill Chauraha emerges as the most congested intersection, with the highest delays in all categories, indicating a need for improved traffic management. The research also underscores the significance of the vehicle's position in the queue on stopped delay, suggesting that automated signals with adaptive traffic control could enhance flow efficiency. Additionally, the study explores the potential of wearable technology, smartphone applications, and advanced sensors for real-time pedestrian tracking and data collection. The findings offer actionable recommendations for urban planners and traffic engineers to optimize infrastructure, reduce delays, and enhance pedestrian safety and mobility.
