Abstract

The article presents a novel theoretical framework, the Demo-livelihoods framework, which examines how microdemographics influence livelihood strategies and land use decisions in Amazonian colonist frontiers. It synthesizes three theoretical approaches—the household and land use life cycle, the livelihoods and capabilities approach, and the revisited theory of multiphasic responses—to explain the co-evolution of household dynamics and livelihoods over three stages of frontier development: pioneer, mature, and post-frontier. The framework highlights the significance of household composition, life cycles, and contextual changes in defining livelihood strategies and the portfolio of capitals households rely on. It emphasizes the transition from subsistence-based strategies to market-oriented ones and the increasing importance of off-farm activities and urban connections. The article concludes by underscoring the potential of the Demo-livelihoods framework for policy design aimed at improving colonists' sustainable living conditions.

Based on Bebbington (1999), VanWey et al. (2013) suggest that livelihood trajectories change as a response to returns to farmers’ capital portfolio over frontier stages. Household decisions are also conditioned by the livelihood decisions of agents, the broad portfolio of assets controlled by the agents, the subjective and context-specific returns to different types of capital, and the evolving multidimensional context.
