Jede Religion, damit auch der Islam, kann Einfluss auf das Individuum, eine Gruppe und ganze Gesellschaften ausüben. Um die Funktionen von Religion für Fundamentalismus und Totalitarismus zu verstehen, wird Religion hier als sozialwissenschaftliche Kategorie verstanden.

Zu „Götzendienern“: Polytheismus (von Griechisch πολύς polys „viel“ und θεοί theoi „Götter“), auf Deutsch auch als „Vielgötterei“ bezeichnet, ist eine religiöse Verehrung einer Vielzahl von Göttern. Die meisten Religionen des Altertums waren polytheistisch. Der Aufruf dieses Verses aus Sure 9 bedeutet also wörtlich ausgelegt „tötet diejenigen, die der Vielgötterei anhängen“. Mohammed belagerte aber nicht nur „polytheistische Widerständler“ der Stadt Ta´if, sondern auch die nordarabische Christenstadt Tabuk. Auf diese beiden militärischen Offensiven beziehen sich einige Verse der Suren 8 und 9: „Zieht in den Kampf, leicht- oder schwerbewaffnet, und kämpft mit Gut und Blut für die Religion Allahs“ (Sure 9,42). „Wenn ihr nicht zum Kampfe auszieht, wird euch Allah mit schwerer Strafe belegen“ (Sure 9,40). „Wenn die Gläubigen töten oder getötet werden, so werden sie das Paradies erlangen, indem sie für die Religion Allahs kämpfen…“ (Sure 9,112).

Mohammed Ibn Abd Al Wahhab ist der Begründer der Islamschule des Wahhabismus und war aufgrund seines sehr langen Lebens im 18. Jahrhundert sehr einflussreich. Ausführlicher dazu. Wagemakers beschreibt den Wahhabismus als „Najdi-Ausprägung von Salafismus“, weil Al-Wahhab in Verbindung mit dem aus dem Najd – Zentral-Saudi-Arabien – stammenden Mohammed Ibn Saud die Grundlagen für Auslegung des Islam legte, wie er seither in Saudi-Arabien praktiziert wird (Wagemakers, 2012).

Every principle must have its vanguard that will carry it forth. The vanguard will pay a steep price and suffer many losses while paving the road for the Islamic society. There is no belief, either earthly or heavenly, that does not need such a vanguard, one that will give all it as for its belief to be victorious.
