Abstract

When an architect designs a building, he develops individual blocks and then combines them into a desired structure. In a similar manner a chemical engineer works when a chemical factory is designed: the reactors for elementary processes are developed and then they are combined to form a production plant. To steer the operation of the plant into a different production mode, its manager would modify the processes in individual reactors and/or the network of production lines. Tacitly, such design and control are based on the assumption that individual structural parts and processes are independent and can be combined at will, perhaps under certain constrains.
