Abstract

This study focuses on the design and development of a net-zero-energy residential building in Ahmedabad, India, using the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) and energy simulation tools like Design Builder (DB). The research explores various design variables to optimize energy consumption and achieve maximum comfort. Key topics include the comparison of GOA with Genetic Algorithm (GA) for energy optimization, the use of DB for detailed energy simulation, and the economic feasibility of installing solar panels. The study also highlights the significance of integrating passive and active solar design strategies for achieving net-zero energy buildings. The results demonstrate substantial energy savings and provide a practical pathway towards achieving nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) in India, aligning with broader sustainable development goals. The research also discusses the potential of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) and the use of advanced materials like Aerated Autoclaved Concrete (AAC) blocks and Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) foam for improved thermal performance. The study concludes with a detailed analysis of the economic feasibility of the proposed design, emphasizing the importance of strong policy implementation and large-scale training for professionals involved in achieving NZEBs.
