Abstract

This chapter delves into the design and hardware implementation of a novel protocol for digital video transmission over GSM interfaces. It begins with a historical overview of video signal digitization and the evolution of digital video transmission, highlighting the role of compression techniques and standards like MPEG. The text then introduces a novel protocol designed to transmit video images over GSM radio interfaces, detailing the compression methods used (MPEG, H264, H265) and the necessary interfaces for integrating video into GSM physical channels and logic. A brief overview of the GSM standard is provided, explaining its spectrum allocation and multiple access techniques (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA). The core of the chapter focuses on the hardware implementation of the proposed solution, including the design of a 'Brewer-Buffer' circuit for fragmenting and distributing video data into TDMA frames. Simulation results and performance analysis are presented, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed protocol.
