Reversible computation recently gained a lot of interest due to applications in areas like quantum computation and low power design. Due to its special properties, the established circuit design flow cannot simply be applied to reversible logic. In this work, we consider hardware description languages for the scalable design and synthesis of reversible circuits. Two complementary directions are discussed, namely (1) exploiting the conventional design flow and mapping the result to a reversible circuit, and (2) developing an entirely new design flow, which considers reversibility right from the beginning.
