Abstract

This chapter delves into the sustainable evolution of supermarket e-commerce services, focusing on reducing single-use plastic waste. A case study from a master’s project at the University of Porto, in collaboration with Sonae MC, aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Continente Online’s delivery service. The study identifies unsustainable practices and proposes a set of reusable components to replace single-use plastics. Mixed methods were applied to develop the solution, which was tested in a real-operations context at a Continente store in Aveiro. The test revealed significant improvements in picking productivity and a reduction in product incidents, highlighting the potential of design methodologies in enhancing sustainability and efficiency in the e-commerce sector.
